Can anyone read this job description?
« on: Monday 14 November 05 15:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, I would welcome guesses on this rellie's job description.  I thought it was 'Lamp Turnner Railway' as first, but now I'm not so sure.  All ideas gratefully received, soz no prizes though.  Regards, TonyR.

There is an occupation called Lamp Trimmer.  In either Royal or Merchant Navy, originally responsible for keeping all oil lamps on the vessel in working order, later became a general assistant to the Boatswain and Storekeeper. A Petty Officer.

That could explain why Railway is in brackets??

I guess Lamp Trimmer makes more sense than my idea of Lamp Turner, so thanks to all for the suggestion.  Regards, TonyR.

hi tony,
definitly lamp trimmer!! all the railway companies employed trimmers to look after the signal lamps, you usualy started as a trimmer, porter, fire dropper or some other menial job and then progressed up the ladder to become a fireman and then passed fireman eventualy (if you were lucky or lived that long) driver and inspector. probably in a more recent census you will find him in a different railway job.
                                                        all the best kali.
