1841 Census look up - Saunders
« on: Monday 14 November 05 17:43 GMT (UK) »
I'd be grateful for any help with the following:

I am looking for the names of parents of

George Saunders b 1836 Abingdon

he may have had sisters Martha b 1841  and Amelia b 1839
born in Drayton, Oxfordshire (but may not be related to George)

The children lived in Abingdon 1851
Thanks.

Welshwoman,

I've been through the images for Abingdon and cannot find George.   There seem to be only 4 SAUNDERS families in the town at the time (the images are not too good in places and pretty well unreadable).

Name, Age, Occupation, Born in County ?
William, 30,   , y
Mary, 30,   , y
Jane, 3,  , y

James, 50, unreadable, y
Elizabeth, 50,  , y
Jane, 16,  , y
Elizabeth, 13,  , y
Emma, 2,  , y

William, 35. Weaver, y
Sarah, 40,  , y
William, 17,  , y
Eliza, 14,  , y
Elln, 11,  , y
Harriet, 2,  , y
Edward, 6,  , y

Henry, 25,  , y
Emma, 20,  , y
James COX, 10,  , y
Martha COX, 10,  , y

As you are probably aware, ages of adults are rounded down to the nearest 5, no relationships are shown.

Regards
Harry

Thanks for checking for me HarryW.  None of these fit with info I have so  I guess my search for George continues but not in Abingdon.

Hi Welshwoman (welcome to rootschat)

Is 'your' George Saunders the one who is in the Workhouse aged 14 in 1851 - if so this might be him listed as SANDERS in Abingdon in 1841

HO107/0032/4
Ottwell Lane
Lewis Sutherland 38 Shoemaker
Frances Sanders 36 not born in county
George Sanders aged 5 born in county

What do you think?

I have now found a burial for Frances Saunders at St Helens Abingdon Oct 9th 1842 aged 37 - which again points to the son George in the Workhouse, sadly I can't find a baptism for George in either of the two Abingdon Churches however my transcripts for St Helens only go up to Dec 1836 so he may be after this.  I suppose the big question is was Frances married or not - I have not found a likly marrige of a ? Saunders to a Frances ? in Abingdon yet but it could have happened elsewhere

OH GOODNESS THAT'S IT!!  Thanks so much.

Yes, George was in the workhouse in 1851, two Saunders girls were listed also.

I have the confirming information that George's father's christian name was LEWIS (although recorded as Saunders) and a shoemaker.  Probably George chose to ignore the detail of his father's surname when he married in Swansea years later!

They (Lewis and Frances) probably never married, and the girls in the workhouse at the time were probably not George's sisters.

Frances death suggests that Lewis died, or left without family to look after George.

Amazingly this means my surname could (should) have been SUTHERLAND.  My 84 year old dad is going to be shocked by that bit!

Thanks again Debbie
