I'm unfamiliar with records in Scotland. I have from the 1881 census for Cornwall and the LDS: Agnes MERCER nee HARBISON born Maybole in Ayrshire 1852. Her husband is James MERCER born 1854/55. Unfortunately the 1881 census for Cornwall gives his birthplace as Rainbryn, NB. I take NB to be Scotland but Rainbryn...This has to be a mistake, doesn't it?

I can't find them in online 1901 census and the online LDS has no record of their marriage.

So can anyone please tell me how I go about finding his birthplace?

Hiya,

What a puzzler!

This is a good site for finding Scottish places http://www.scotroots.com/parish.htm

But it's got me stumped!  It looks like it is badly transcribed.

Sorry,
Pam

I have had a look at my atlas and found a place called RAIGBEG
in Scotland, its near Tomatin. Wonder if this could be the one??
I should add I know almost nothing about Scottish Ancestry or Scotland!
Good Luck, Frances

It maybe that he has given a farm name or an area too small to be picked up by us now.  If he was born in 1855 then you may have some luck on http://www.scotlandspeople.org.uk but if it is 1854 then I doubt he'll be there.

What about there marriage?

If it is in Scotland then you would be in luck as the reg will give full parental details including mother maiden names.  I don't have any credits (on the site above) left so can't search just now.

But I would try that - sorry it isn't a free answer!

Hi

Checked for James Mercers 1855-1865 on Scotlands People and there are abt 9 - only 1 in 1855 born in Dollar, Clackmannan, & 3 are in 1856 2 in Glasgow area and 1 in a Ferry Port in Fife

Don't know if this helps at all
