How do you spell it? As it sounds? - Keeble?
« on: Tuesday 15 November 05 20:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

My family line is Keeble and it is possible they originated in Ireland. I am trying to locate the family name but wonder if it is spelt differently in Gaelic to sound like Keeble in English?

Any ideas anyone? Thanks

Hi Dhyan

There are a number of possibilities but I am not sure about any of them I'm afraid.

My guess would be either Kevil or Keville (or either with an O in front!) as the gaelic spelling of these would be "O Cibhil".  Its not hard to see how the "bh" for the v sound could cause a change in pronunciation in the English version. Perhaps?

Kivelle is another variation of the same name.  Both may be derived from Kivlehan.

Hope this helps a bit.

Best wishes
