Mary,

This doesn't make sense, but it looks like Wore to me.

Hi Mary
Could it be ARON (Aaron nowadays)  Spelling was not a priority then and biblical names cropped up in Scotland. I have Nathaniel, Daniel and Isaac in my tree albeit in Caithness.
Just a thought

Hi,

I don't know which date is correct(?) I couldn't find any marriage for a Catherine Whittock/Whytock to a John Burgess.

JOHN BURGESS
KATHARINE WHITTIT
Marriage:  April 12, 1794
Colinton, Midlothian, Scotland

JOHN BURGES
CATHARINE WHITTET
Marriage:  November 12, 1792
Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland

William Burgess
Died: 1856
Age: 54
Place: Leith, Midlothian
Approximate Birth year: 1801 - 1803

Alexander Burgess
Birth April 4, 1794
Christened April 20, 1794
Father John Burgess
Mother Katharine Whittit
Colinton, Midlothian

Elisabeth Burges
Birth December 2, 1795
Christened December 27, 1795
Father John Burges
Mother Katharine Whittit
Colinton, Midlothian

Margaret Burges
Birth July 23, 1798
Christened August 15, 1798
Father John Burges
Mother Catherine Whittit
Liberton, Midlothian

Could not find birth on Scotlands People for Margaret Burgess (any spelling), but did find it on Vital Records Index.
Williams birth not listed on Vital Records or Family Search, from 1795 - 1805.

As far as the signature goes, I think it may say "Gord", as it looks to have only 4 letters in the name.  (I'm probably wrong, but it was worth a shot.)

Where was the place of death for William, as maybe someone who has access to the 1851 census, could look up William and his brother?

Hi

I think it says MR Burgess. The e that people are seeing at the end of the first name is the curl on the B for Burgess.

I have a Burgess in West Lothian but they came over from Dublin, if that adds to the confusion.

Yes, Jane, I think that you are probably correct with "Mr Burgess". Well done! :)

It's not very helpful for the purpose of genealogy, but I think that you are right.

I must say that the vast majority of my death certificates only give an initial, rather than a full given name for the informant.

eg. P. Baker

They very rarely state a full given name. Perhaps the formality of a death certificate and the gloomy circumstances that surround the whole process do not lend themselves to giving a jolly first name. Perhaps some restraint is called for.
But in this case instead of going with "the initial only", they chose to go with "Mr" instead.

An attempt at appropriate solemnity, perhaps.

Some good thoughts!!

But what has happened to OP Mary Clark who hasn't been sighted since 17 November 2005 (birthday - I'm not prepared to admit their ages - of my only daughter and her Dad)??

Cheers,

JAP

You are quite correct, Jap. Very observant of you!

Mary Clark was last online on November 19th 2005!!

Are we all wasting our time here, or what? :-\ :-\??

Is Mary Clark having a real life in the real world, while we are here in cyberspace trying to solve her problems for her???

Oh well, makes you think...........

Hi UKg,

Well, I wasn't being all that observant - after all, it was a date I tend to notice!

Wasting our time?  I wouldn't think so.  Mary Clark might come back and see the thread and might be helped.  And other rells/family members might find it in cyberspace.

Actually, when people are recorded as being online is quite interesting  :D

The date shown might or might not be when last they viewed posts on RootsChat.  One is only recorded as being online (I think) if one logs on (either on each visit or as a standard procedure).  But one can easily visit and browse RC without logging on to RC.  I've noticed some RC members who aren't recorded on RC as having visited RC for yonks but who have (from posts I've noticed from them elsewhere) clearly read threads on RC ...

Funny old world.

All the very best to all (and hoping that Mary Clark has had some success),

JAP

Hello JAP,

Well, I feel a little happier now, just knowing that people may be peeping at our efforts, even without logging on :)

But I am sure that if poor Mary Clark were aware of our efforts, she would have surfaced by now.

Perhaps she is snowed in somewhere, without any electricity, just waiting for the big thaw!

I just hope that she manages to keep warm and not get bird flu!!
