Hughes family in Brazil

The first two children of my Welsh grandparents  - Hugh and Margaret HUGHES were both born in Brazil.
Margaret b 1852 and Ann b 1854.
The family returned to Liverpool England approx 1865.
I am having no luck tracing how and when my grandparents first went to Brazil and wonder if anyone can offer ideas or suggestions to narrow my search field down as I have searched many hours through shipping lists etc. with no luck.Appreciate any help with this.
