How far have you got with this James Doyle and are you going to get the cert 10b 651?

There was a Workhouse in the Preston Qtr of Whitehaven.

The 1841 census is at Whitehaven but is not indexed and unless you know exactly what you want can take ages

I have looked not only through the indexes that there are at Whitehaven Records office but through nearly all of the parish record microfilms, with no success at all

If you order that certificate please let me know cos I want to know at what church the wedding took place, so I can find it in the parish records as its doing my head in

I've just had a thought - when did marriages first take place in Registry Offices?  I wonder if it was about 1837 ish and those records are not in the RO

And the heat in the RO today was uncomfortable

Thanks very much for looking.  I know it is a very boring job.  I can never find anything I am looking for at our records office.

I will be ordering the cert.  It still wont tell me if the 51 census giving Agnes as his mother is the right one or not.  But it will at least give me his fathers name.

I am still not sure if the entry on the 51 cencus was Preston Quarter, it looked like it to me but not sure, what do you think?

I suppose I will just have to wait until the 41 census if put on to Ancestry.  I hope they do it.  We have a great website for Durham area giving all the census info.  Unfortunately you don't see the orginal but has helped me a lot.

please don't tell me you cant find anything at Sunderland or Durham, I keep meaning to go there, on a regular visit to my sisters in Crook, and to see the worst team in the league 'though I still keep watching them

You might be able to find things better than me.  I am a novice at this game.  I have never been to Sunderland only Durham.

You must be daft watchin Sunderland, but then we all have our crosses to bear.

My biggest problem in record offices is concentrating on one thing I start off well, then see a name or a connection that interest me and look that one up - I sort of bounce around inefficiently but get there in the end in my own sort of way

I'm getting better at it though

As for footie - Well you can't call me a "glory hunter"  or say I only follow them 'cos they always win

My problem is I can never find anything in the records office.  So I give up very quickly.  I would like to be able to find everything online.  It would make everyone's life that bit easier.

I have the marriage cert.  His fathers name was Peter Doyle (Deceased) he was a engineman (Do you know what that is) I thought he would be a coalminer.

They got married at the registry office like you thought on 1st October 1856. 

Do you know any way I can check out this Peter I found a death in Deaths Jun 1856

Is there any way of finding out if this was his father, and who his mother was.
