an "engineman" could be several things,

I suspect it was the engine driver and probally to do with the coal mines, when you look at a picture of a pit you see a tower with two huge wheels on the top, the "cages" that went up and down were driven by huge engines this would be the engines your ancestor would be operating

A Peter Doyle lived at 36 Cleator Moor Rd, aged 48, and a widower and was an Engine driver, he was born in Ireland, he had a daughter named Racheal aged 15 a dressmakers apprentice born in Whitehaven according to the 1851 census, if this is the right one HO 107 2437

Do you want a photo of the house, it should still be there, its a long row of terraced houses, I can see if I can get one, though a Whitehaven lad in Cleator Moor, phew could be risky 

I came across some Middleton's today (burials) at Holy Trinity Whitehaven

I wrote them down and will post them in the near future

That is great.  It has to be the right Peter, but wonder where James was, he would have been 20 ish.  That other one in New Houses must be wrong.  I think the death I found in 1856 must have been him as he was dead before they got married.

Yes please I would love to see the row of houses.

I also look forward to hearing from you about the Middletons, only thing is I think Ann's parents moved to Blaydon, Newcastle area before the 71 census.  But would still like to know the ones you have found. 

Ann was living in Queen St, Whitehaven when she married James is that still there? James lived in Cleator Moor, which makes me think the Peter above is right.

I've not looked yet, I'm a little less mobile than I was a few days ago I think I have a damaged cartilage in my knee

If its where I think it is it should be the main Cleator Moor Rd

I have to ask around work, and if its still there then no problem as its one of the three routes I can come home from work
