If you look at the coverage charts for indexed marriages in 1858/1860 at FreeBMD, you'll see you really need to look up the complete registers, I'm afraid...

Haven't checked whether these years are all available with the 'view images' option. Otherwise you may need to spend a few credits at 1837online.

By the way - I can see one James Doyle, age 22, in Cleator in 1851. He's a lodger, Coal miner, b. Ireland... Hope he's not yours  ;)

Thanks for the 51 look up for the Middleton's, no I never had that one.

I dont' think that James is mine, with him saying born in Ireland, on the 61,71 and 81 it says born in Whitehaven.  Unless he was lying.

I have had a look on Family Relatives and can't find him on the date I have in 1857.  Really strange this one.

Thanks for your help.

You are a star.  I looked on family relatives for Ann Middleton in Dec 56 and guess what I found her under 10b 651.  I wonder why her name is not on the free BMD site.

I think I found him on the 51 census under Dyon.  With his mother called Agnes, living in Preston Quarter with no father.  Would you know if that is the work house in Whitehaven, and why would someone be in their with a grown up family.

Just need to try and clarify that.

Thanks very much for your help.

Hi Angela,

FreeeBMD is not complete yet, and they transcribe from the national alphabetical indexes as far as I am aware - not page by page.

I'm a bit puzzled as far as your 1851 is concerned. I see the entry you are talking about. I have trouble reading the address, something like 'Flout Row'??, n° 41:

Agnes Dixon, head, wid, 49, formerly Coal miner's wife, b. Scotland and her 8 children.

What makes you think it's a workhouse?

I have done a search for Preston Quarter which is at the top of the original sheet,  and it came up as a workhouse.  Do you not think it is?  I thought the address was 41 front row.

It was someone else who sent me the original link via e-mail who thinks this is James Doyle.  I can see how you make it out to be Dixon.  Is there any way we can put it on this site for other peoples opinions.  I am not that clever.

Thanks

Angela

"Flout Row" will be Front Row, there was a front, middle and back row, they were three rows of houses called "Newhouses" in the Newtown area of Whitehaven, originally built to house Lord Lonsdale's/ Lowthers workers in his mines

In those days mineworkers a valuable commodity and although Lowther didn't pay the best wages, he supplied 300 of them free housing that came with the job, not what we we would call decent housing now but then. A one bedroomed house where huge families might of lived

I have been in the records office tonight and looking at the indexes without much look - I can't read them, as they are a sort of negative

I will be looking through the parish records to see if I can find any information maybe on Friday, can't promise depends on my boss, if I can sneak away at 13:00  so still looking

Andrew

There is a book on Newhouses called "Newhouses a celebration" by Colin McCourt which gives an idea of the conditions that people lived in

That would be great, I wont tell your boss.

Did you manage to have a look at the entry Tanja and I were talking about.  I would really like to know if the 51 census with Agnes being the head is James's mother and who her husband would have been.  I could do with finding the 41 census, any ideas were I can get that from.

I did a google on front row, newhouses and found the book you were on about with some pictures very interesting.

Thanks
