German Surname

Help! anyone in Germany or who speaks the language - how do I pronounce this persons surname

I would say its more of a Slav name - Polish or Czech - maybe originating in somewhere like Silesia or Boehmia?

Hi D ap D - I did'nt think it sounded particularly German either    his family are all in Germany but these days you never know do you, just because someone lives in a particular country does not mean they were born there

Hi Suey,
what I really meant was, at the end of 45, there were a lot of German nationals living in territory that was annexed by Poland (Silesia), Russia (East Prussia), Czechoslovakia (Sudetenland - but that is a special case).

My brother in law's father had to leave Silesia when he was 3. He is German, but the surname doesn't sound it. I also have friends in the Ruhr area, whose parents came from other coal mining areas to live in Dortmund/Essen, whose surnames end in ...ski. Also not very German sounding, but Germans through and through.

If you look at a map of Germany dated end of 1800s Germany was much larger. After WW1 Germany lost about 15% of its territories, so there are a lot of possibilities.
