1871 census. ADAMS & HARVEY
« on: Thursday 02 September 04 22:32 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Could someone look for Sarah Ann Adams b abt 1856, her parents were Edward and Mary Adams.

Also Isaac Harvey b 1847 Woodham Mortimer Essex

Sarah and Isaac were married in Driffield in 1873 so I'm hoping that they are somewhere in the area in 1871

I would appreciate any info
Thanks Sue

Hello Mick,

Thanks for the info, not sure if they're mine or not yet, I'll have to do a bit more digging. The age for Sarah seems OK so I'm hopeful.

I take it there were no Harveys, I'm having real problems with them.

Best wishes Sue

Hi Sue,

This looks promising from the 1871 census :)

Ref:RG10/4805  Folio 49 Page1

Admin County:Yorkshire

Civil Parish:Gembling

West side of the Green

Isaac Harvy,Servant,Unmarried,21,b.?

Isaac is listed as a servant on a farm, the enumerator has noted that it is 412 acres and the farmer employs 12 labourers and 1 boy.The index for this page has transcribed his birthplace as the rather unlikely 'Woodemmoton,Essex' having looked at the image it is much more likely to be Woodham Mortimer, infact,I'm certain that is what it says :)

Isaac was the only Essex lad at listed on the farm, all of the other occupants were local people.

I hope this helps you out a bit,Mick ;)

Hello Mick,

Yes that's my Isaac, need to scratch my head a bit now and decide what to do next to trace his family.

Sarah Adams is also the right one, she died aged 32 from epilepsy after providing Isaac with a multitude of children.

Thanks again   Sue

Hi Sue,

I searched again on the 1871 census looking for Harvy's in Yorkshire with a connection to Essex, but no joy I'm afraid :(

There a acouple of things that you could do to try and locate Isaac's parents :)

The first I would suggest is to obtain Isaac's birth certificate,I had a look at the BMD's for Isaac's birth  with the info you gave of him being born in 1847,there was only one that I could find that MIGHT be him;

Harvey Isaac, 1847, March, Maldon (1837-1972), Essex Vol12 Page167

As I understand it Maldon was the registration district for Woodham Mortimer,so this COULD prove to be your man :)

The birth certificate would, hopefully, give the names of his parents.

Or,you could post a request for a look up(on the Essex board)for Harvy's in Woodham Mortimer in the 1851 and 1861 census'.

Lastly, you could search this site for postings by 'kevan' and ask his advice as he's very knowledgable about all things Essex.

I hope this helps a bit,good luck,Mick ;)

Hello Mick,

I have Isaac's birth cert and yes he is from Woodham Mortimer. His mother Emma SMITH!!!? is on the 1841 census in Woodham M but there is no sign of Jacob Harvey his father.

So until I find Jacob and Emma and their son Isaac on a census I have no idea where Jacob came from or where the family were in 1851/61

By 1871 Isaac aged 21 is in Yorkshire but as yet no sign of his family. So did his move to Yorks happen early in his life or only later?

I'll just keep on looking.

Many thanks for your suggestions it's always good to get someone elses views on a problem.

Thanks for all your help  Sue
