1881 census lookup please
« on: Friday 03 September 04 10:56 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have this census please
I'm looking for Robert Townsend/ Townsley/ Townslie who would have been aged agout 80
He died in Dec 1882 at the Old Monkland Poorhouse, so was possibly there for the 1881 census.
I'm hoping to find his place of birth so I can start looking further. He travelled around a lot as he was a Travelling Tinsmith
Any help would really be appreciated
Many thanks

Hi,

I have looked through the 1881 census for Scotland using the wildcard Towns* and cannot find any males in the age group you are looking for.  From you description of his lifestyle it may be that he was living rough and did not take part in the census.

Researching - Lawton in Cheshire, Staffordshire & Lancashire; Bissette in Ireland; Bannigan in Scotland & Ireland: Goodwin in Cheshire & Staffordshire.

 ???

Hi, Have used the1881 disc for Scotland found the Old Monkland Poorhouse, but your Robert does nor appear on it, so perhaps he may have been somewhere in the area.
I did however, insert his name but there was nothing for any Robert Townsend etc came up, could he perhaps have beenin England? have you tried the 1881 census for there? of course, it also possible he may have evaded the census? ( oh we do love our elusive ancestors don`t we!!!)

This is a long shot and may not pay off, but Scottish Death certificates contain the parents' names (including mother's maiden name if known).  But since he died in the poorhouse, they may not have had a record of them.  But if he has evaded everything else, it might be your only route forward.  You can view these certificates online (cost 6 credits, 30 credits cost £6) at:
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
I'm having a check on my 1881 CDs but if Mars Barr and Des haven't been lucky so far, I probably won't be either.

Hi, Like the others, I can't see him in 1881 census, but I had a look at 1861 census Index for Lanrkshire, this was the only Robert Townshead listed.
Parish Clyde (644/5) Enum. dist. 42 page 14

Robert Townshead age 60 born England

There seems to be a lot on single people, young and old living in this area, not many families.

Unfortuneately, this being only an index, it does'nt give any addresses., you would need to check out the actual census for any other information.

Thanks everyone for your help
Might have to put this one in the too hard basket for the moment
On the IGI there is a Robert Townsley born 1802 in Yorkshire whose his father's name was Francis...a name which runs in my family like the proverbial "wooden leg"
ever hopeful
