Thomas Frederick Gillett
« on: Tuesday 22 November 05 10:04 GMT (UK) »
According to 1871 Census my great grandfather, Thomas Frederick Gillett was born in Ireland.
I have found a person in the 1841 census for Oxfordshire who could have been his father - he is Thomas Gillett, age 48, born Henley Oxfordshire, and listed as a Chelsea Pensioner.
His wife was Elizabeth, age 45, born Cavan Ireland, and two sons, James (14) and Thomas (10) both born Cavan, Ireland.
I think Thomas snr. was with the 30th Regiment in Ireland and married during his period of service there before returning to England.
Can anyone please give me advice as to how I can check birth details of Thomas junior to see if he was, in fact, Thomas Frederick Gillett.
Thanks in anticipation.
Alan

Do you have the marriage certificate of Thomas Frederick Gillett?  Should list his father's name and occupation; with any luck, he'll be listed as Thomas, 'army pensioner'!

I believe that for those dates you'd need to be looking for church records, there's a general guide to records in County Cavan on Genuki:

http://www.sierratel.com/colinf/genuki/CAV/

PRO catalogue has (not sure if this is related; dates would seem to be too early for Thomas aged 48 in 1841)

WO 97/1142/140 - Thomas Gillett b. Oxford served in 1st Garrison Bt, 2nd Garrison Bt. 30th Foot Regiment, discharged aged 33.  Covering dates 1803-1817.  (Discharge papers - generally the dates indicate years of service.  So this Thomas was b. 1784, signed up at age approx. 19 in 1803, served 14 years).

It does show a connection to both Oxford and to the 30th, which is why I included it... maybe another family member?

Hi Annie and Jorose,
Thanks for your responses - I will check the sites you have listed.
TFG's marriage certificate shows both he and his father, Thomas listed as "Musicians".
I think it possible that the Thomas who served with the 30th Foot could have been TFG's grand father, but I understand there was a John Gillett, born Oxford about 1780, and discharged from the Army in 1824, as well as a
Richard Gillett, Oxford born about 1780 who was aPeninsula War veteran. Possibly brothers, but no tie-up as yet.
Will keep banging my head on that damn wall.
Sincere thanks,
Alan ???

Alan,

My ancestor, may be brother to your Thomas Gillett.
I have some information about Thomas Gillett who was in the 30th Regiment of Foot. He was in the Regimental Band. The Regiment was in Ireland and India. Thomas was discharged and "retired" to Henley-On-Thames area - he was responsible for "delivery of the pensions to ex-army guys in the area.
Children were: Sarah Jane, b 1834, Clonmel Ireland; James. b 1836, Newbridge, Ireland; Thomas, b 1840, Newry, Ireland; Catherine, b 1841/42; George, b 1842, henley; John, b 1845/46, Henley; Samuel, b 1848, Rotherfield Greys, Oxfordshire.
Very little info beyond Thomas - parents possibly are James Gillett and Sarah wise.

Regards,
David Gillett.

Hello David,
Thankyou for this wonderful information.
I am a member of the local FHS here in Australia and with the aid of some of the old hands in the Society located the GRO Army Indexes which gave Reference No. 1133 63 (or 53) for the birth of Thomas Gillett. I have sent for the birth certificate and wait anxiously for it's arrival. It should give me details of parents and, I hope, confirm the name as Thomas Frederick.
The 1851 Census shows Thomas (the Chelsea Pensioner) as Head of family, Wife Elizabeth (born Cavan, Ireland) and sons James, 14 and Thomas,10 both born Cavan.
In the 1861 Census there is a Thomas Gillett,21
born Ireland, Private 1/8th Regiment, 16th Depot Battalion, Alverstoke, Hampshire.
I feel sure this is the same person carrying on the family tradition. The one thing that would tie it all together would be the Frederick part.
If you are willing I would like to know the family connection with your own ancestors, but will advise the outcome of the birth certificate when I receive it.
Again David, thanks for your kind assistance.
Alan ;D

Hello from Canada,
I am searching for the roots of Thomas Gillett, born approx 1831 in England.  Came to Canada on or before 1864 and married Elizabeth Edwards, they lived and raised their family in Millbrook Ontario Canada, and his trade was Cabinet-maker.   They had two children William Gillett bn 1865 and Maggie bn 1869.   Just wondered if there could be any connection.
