Brick Wall help please
« on: Tuesday 22 November 05 13:24 GMT (UK) »
Ann Lovitt b. 1781 Redmile  is on the Redmile 1841 and 1851 census, unmarried,  with two grandchildren:-

William Lovitt b. about 1828 Melton Mowbray
Mary Ann Lovitt b. about 1833 Melton Mowbray

She leaves her property to them and William at least stays in Redmile for the rest of his life.

Looking on the IGI shows:

William Lovitt 18.8.1827 Melton Mowbray s/o William Dixon Lovitt and Mary Ann.
Mary Ann Lovitt 1.5.1833 melton Mowbray d/o Dixon Lovitt & Lydia.

Dixon, or William Dixon seems to have been a much married man. The following marriages are listed for him:-

Mary Ann Searcy 28.8.1823 Melton M
Mary Ann Baines 1.3.1827 Melton M
Lydia Fisher 17.1.1832 Melton M
Elizabeth Marshall 31.7.1834

An 1841/51 census look up for Dixon and family would be much appreciated.

There is only one Dixon Lovitt recorded on the IGI, which is
Dixon Lovitt b. 25.7.1802 in Hose, Leics.  Hose is just down the road from Long Clawson, where Ann's brother lived and where the family owned land and property.  But the IGI says his mother is Elizabeth Lovitt, which is where it all breaks down.  Is this a mistake, or did Ann give a false name, being part  of a landowning, respectable family? She is the only instance of a child born out of wedlock in this family I have come across.

Or have I got it all wrong.

Any help to sort this out would be much appreciated.

Thanks so much for very quick responses! That's very helpful.

It's interesting that Dixon says he was born in Redmile in  the 1861 census, but Hose in the 1851. Maybe I am on the right track after all, and the IGI has got his mother's name wrong. Now I need a look up in the Hose prs, I suppose.

Don't suppose, by any remote chance, anyone has them??  :-*
