Dear Geoffrey & Mary - Thank you both for your good advice.
The reference for the 1851 census is H197 1566 p904 -
I think Z's name has been transcribed in a peculiar way - something like Bracknard Triang !
James was married in 1873 - the photo in my profile is his daughter, my grandmother.
When  Z died in 1883 he had been living in Ripley St, Newington - as did James and family.
I have done so much searching I now feel I must wait until more records are unearthed - which by the way reminds me that my English contact suggests we go and dig up the gardens  where Z once resided !
Perhaps he and Susan did not marry although until then he seems a fairly constant fellow - look how many times he was widowed !!
