DOUBLE, LAPPAGE, LEWIS
« on: Wednesday 07 January 04 13:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I recently discovered that my GGGGG Grandfather came from Stratford St Mary.  He was John DOUBLE born circa 1720 and in 1743 he married Tryphena Lewis daughter of Thomas Lewis.  Dates given for her baptism as 1731 suggest she was only 12 so I think the date has to be wrong.

Do you have either of these in your Family Tree.  If yes, I would love to hear from you.

Regards

Sandra

Hi Quite often in the past and even today people are not always baptised when they are babies but when they are a bit older. So if, for example, your relative was baptised when she was 6 she would have married at age 18. Sometimes families were baptised in 'batches'

Hi there Arijaba

Clincher was quite correct in saying that sometimes families were baptised in batches for many reasons.
Very often Weddings and Baptisms took place on the only day that our ancestors had off - namely Christmas Day.

According to my Oracle - There was also another reason a bit later in the 18th Century

In order to help raise taxes, in 1783 a Stamp Duty of 3d was imposed on every entry in Parish Register - Paupers were exempt – but most people avoided paying the tax by not baptising Children.
In consequence, when the act was repaeled some years later in 1794 – mass family baptisms took place.

To Chris and Clincher

Many thanks for the advice

Will put it into practice.

I had a mass baptizm in my Double family in the mid 1800's so know what you mean.

Best Regards
Sandra

In the Essex Record Office at Chelmsford they have a lot of type-written transcripts of Essex marriage registers (reference T/R 203/Vol 1 -Vol 80 odd). I think they were prepared by people who may have worked in the Essex Record Office in 1980s and they did a splendid job of the transcripts. I have been using them a lot recently and, after I saw the name Lappage appear here, I noticed the same name mentioned quite a bit in the transcripts. Do you want details?

Many Thanks Clincher

The info is going to be very useful as, though I believe my Lappage line is from Suffolk, I have a feeling that they are linked in some way to the Essex branch.

Lots of work ahead.

All the best
