Hi Tazzie, only sending you this as it seems to much of a coincidence.

1861 census

Thomas Underwood c1814 no place of birth, occupation ?timber layer
Letitia c1814 born Potsgrove, Bedfordshire
David c1843 born Leighton Buzzard, can't read occupation
Sarah c1848 born       "             "
James c1850              "              "
Mary c1852                 "             "
Elizabeth c1855          "
Matthew c1857           "             "

its Elizabeth and Matthew that got me thinking it might be your family. All the best, Kate.

Thanks guys..

That's the right ones. David 18 is 2xgreat grandad.(Andy has it as Daniel).
It looks as if Sarah was a second wife I did wonder given Davids date of birth. Will have to check for death of Letitia.
Thinking about a posting for 1851 as well as I have 3 stray males..

           William b Hockliffe 1834
           Thomas b Leighton Buzzard 1842
       &  Moses b Battlesdon 1839
Could also be Thomas's son -maybe even previous marriage?

              Thanks

Hi again, have found them in the 51'.

Thomas c1814 born Oleng St Mary's, Devon an ag labourer
William c1834 born Bottlesden, Bedfordshire, ag labourer
Moses c1839, bottlesden, ag labourer
Thomas c1842 born Leighton Buzzard, Bed, scholar
David c1844, leighton, a scholar
Susanna (later I presume Sarah?) c1848, leighton, a scholar
James c1850, leighton
Jane Elkerton c1814 born Potsgrove, Bed, housekeeper.

funny thing is that Jane Elkerton is named after Thomas on the census then the kids, thought this unusual for the help really, also the fact that she was born in Potsgrove in 1814 is a bit suspect as Letitia was as well, got a mystery there! Also says that Thomas is married but no sign of wife. I will have a search for Letitia, can't be many with that name! All the best, Kate.

Hi Kate,

This is all getting interesting I now need to find out if Letitia Latitia(IGI) OR Jane are one and the same.
Potsgrove is such a small place not even a hamlet.
I am going to Leighton Buzzard at the weekend to see my parents I will check out the records in the library and let you know.
Dont suppose you can see a Robert Underwood b @ 1838 in Exeter living in Leighton Buzzard in 1861 or 1871 can you .I have found him and now think he could be Thomas's eldest son.
Hope I'm not being cheeky for asking.

             Many thanks

                  Tracy
