A Happy but sad find
« on: Thursday 24 November 05 09:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi everybody

We have had the luck to come across an old family bible with the most amazing old photos in the back, but alas most of them are not named.  They are from around 1845 and before, we have managed to name about four of them, but is there anywhere on this site one can post photos for other people to view in the hope that they may recognise photos that they too may have.  The bible is a Gibbon/Ruddock bible but includes spouses as well from what we can ascertain.  So the people in there could be anyone at all.

I would love to be able to put names to these incredible old photos

Any suggestins would be greatly appreciated.

I would post one here but have no idea how

Regards

Lones

Hi

Cumbria FHS has on its website an area where you can put such photo's of local people and scenes and ask people for their thoughts.  Does the Yorkshire FHS have the same?

Wishing you lots of luck

Hi Lones,
I notice you said they are from 1845 and before - that's pretty unlikely, as commercial photography only became available after 1841 and even then it was only daguerreotypes (metal) for a while.  They probably date from after about 1860.  Maybe if you were to post scans of them on this site (either in the Common Room or the Photo Restoration board) we could pin dates on a few of them for you, which might help you to identify the people?
Just a thought!  We're getting pretty good at dating photos now  :)

Cheers

Thanks Prue

I will try that, I saw instructions for posting photos somewhere on this site, so I will find that and have a go.  Where is the Photo restoration board?  I haven't found that yet.  I have tried to get all around this site, but must have missed that.

Cheers

But then again, maybe it did work after all

Can anyone else see this?

Hi Lones,
Yes, it worked, I can see it!  Great scan, too.  Nice quality.
The photo restoration board is here: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,298.0.html
Why not post a few examples, maybe ones that give an idea of the different styles of photo, and we can start trying to give you some dates?
Cheers
