Thorpe and Halibad??
« on: Thursday 24 November 05 13:30 GMT (UK) »
I have a Ancestor who says in a couple of Censuses she was born in Thorpe Essex, Cant seem to find a Thorpe or Halibad(another place she said she was born in Essex) on multi map. Any ideas anyone?
Regards

I've found this a source of frustration myself, where names get shortened.   I guess its where they didn't travel much and so didn't see the need to distinguish place names (I had real fun with Great Ellingham and Ellingham !!).

How about Thorpe Bay - now part of Southend on Sea ?

Thankyou for your replies. After going through the Censuses again and good old Ancestry site, it works out its not Halibad but Halstead!
Dont know why she should say Halstead and then Thorpe in different Cesuses!

Hi Ninky it looks like you are the right one as found one of my Ancestors sisters. One Census she said Thorpe but all of the rest she says Colchester.
