Adopted
« on: Saturday 04 September 04 16:55 BST (UK) »
My father, John (Lovell?) ROOD was adopted by Frederick ROOD and ???.  How does one find birth details and adoption records.

I'm no longer in contact with my father although if it was essential I could contact him but I'd rather avoid it if I could.

Hi Zeb,
You do not mention dates if his birth was after 1837 then you could search free BMD which is not yet complete, or if no luck there then you could try 1837.com, this is a fee paying site.

Adoption records are better after 1927 but this link to the National Archives should help you to get started.
Happy Hunting, Frances

Hi Zeb

You need to get your fathers original birth certificate. Not his adoption birth certificate.

Do you know what his birth mother called him when he was born ??  All people that are adopted are registered at birth by their birth mother. So he could have a different name on his original birth certificate, than the name he has now.

If you know his original name,  then you just look in the birth indexs for his birth and order the certificate as normal.

Good luck
Cassie
