1851 / 1861 Jersey census lookup please?
« on: Monday 28 November 05 03:03 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for

Samuel LOCK, tailor - no idea of age or birthplace
his wife Sarah, might have been born Bath, Somerset

They had a daughter, Elizabeth, who was born in Bath 1823.
She married at St Saviors in Jersey, Jan 1847, to William Henry Mutton,  before going to Australia in 1849.   Selina LOCK was a witness.

They were probably all still in England in 1841.

In 1856, Samuel's wife Sarah is mentioned in William's will - she was a widow, but still living in Jersey.

Any information gratefully received (I have Elizabeth's marriage details thanks)
Christine

Hi Christine -

I think I have the whole family for you -

in the 1851 census, St Helier, Jersey I found -

LOCK
John - head marr  28  iron founder  born: Bath England
Hannah  wife  mar  27  -  born: London
[Is this John a son of Samuel ?]

and in the same address but another household:
LOCK
Samuel  head   unm   18  coach, wheelwright  born Guernsey
George  brother  unm  17 iron founder/apprentice  Guernsey
Emily  sister  unm 15 dressmaker/apprentice  Guernsey
Eliza  sister  unm  13  scholar   Guernsey
Frederick  brother  unm  11  scholar
Harriet  sister  unm  9   scholar

Of course, Elizabeth [Lock]and William Mutton would have left for Australia by then, but I wondered if some of these are her siblings - particularly John who was born in Bath?

I looked in Channel Islands 1841 Jersey census online, but didn't find this family - but given the above information, I then looked in Guernsey and found them! -

St Peter Port, Guernsey, district 6:  Glatney Esplanade
Saml. LOCK  40 Tailor  E[ngland]
Sarah  38  E
John 18 Moulder E
Elizabeth  16 dress m  E
Francis (F)  14  E
Salina  [sic]  12 Y   [Y = yes, born in Guernsey]
Samuel 10  Y
George 8  Y
Emily  6 Y
Eliza  4 Y
Frederic  2 Y

So this is where Samuel Lock was in 1841, and Elizabeth before she married and emigrated.  Bearing in mind the 1841 ages are rounded, Samuel would have been born in England (Bath?)  between approx 1796-1801, and Sarah two years later.

Good luck with looking up the Bath connections!

words cannot express my rapture at the moment with this information   :D   Now I have something further to go on at last, and even put a timeframe on when the Lock family came to Guernsey from England.  I also searched the online 1841 for Jersey, it didn't occur to me they could be on another of the Channel Islands.  I would say that they are Elizabeth's siblings with the Bath birthplace in 1851.  Looks like another of the family legends put to rest - the 'of French descent' is looking pretty shallow on evidence now  ;D

many thanks

Christine - I glad you are pleased with this information!

I have also looked up some of the siblings in the 1871 census, but have not done all of them yet:

17 Wesley Street, St Helier
LOCK
Samuel
head  m  39  coach maker empl 3 men and 3 boys  Guernsey
Annie  wife  m  36  tailoress  Jersey  St Brelade
Frederick  son  13 scholar  St Helier
Alice  dau  10  scolar  St H
Harry  son  7  scholar St H
Nelly  dau  5    St H
Jessy  dau  8 months

St Saviour's main road, St Saviour
LOCK
George
head  m  38  seaman  Guernsey  St Peter Port
Elizabeth  wife  40  Jersey ST Helier
George  son  14  ag lab  Jersey St Helier
Charles  son  13  blacksmith  St H
Thomas  son   9   scholar

Great Union Road, St Helier
LOCK
Frederick
head  m  30  coach builder  [  ditto - line above: Jersey St Helier sic -  1841 census says Guernsey]
Esther  wife  24  dressmaker  Jersey St Helier
Frederick  son  2  Jersey St Helier

I looked for John Lock and wife Hannah in 1871 - but they were not there;  and I guess the sisters (Emily, Eliza and Harriet) might have been married by then, so I didn't find them;  but I have not looked for Francis or Selina yet... I think it would be necessary to find their marriages too.

Also, I have not tackled the 1861 census - it's not indexed in the Jersey archives, so its a bit of a nuisance to search.  It might be better for you to search an online version such as 1837online.com - for example, I had a quick look and found a Hannah Lock aged 37 in Bath.  Had they moved back to England?  There are lots of other suspects, but not in Jersey!!

There's a lot more to research on this family from the Jersey side - if you want me to.  Let me know if you are interested.

Thank you very much Mike for your added information.  I ended up searching right through the on line Jersey census myself last night - mainly to see if there were any MUTTON families about - there wasn't in 1841.  There was a lot more information there than when I last looked and I hadn't even noticed Guernsey there before.
Also whilst just surfing around I found myself at the National Archives and discovered you can search the Ancestry index for most of the census years.  Whilst 'just looking' gives very scanty information I could see that there was no Hannah LOCK or a John of the right age.
There has been no sign of his mother Sarah since 1841 - perhaps she went back to Bath.  Though the will I have from 1856 for daughter Elizabeth's husband said "Sarah LOCK, widow, late of Bath, now of St Helier Jersey"  No likely Sarah  turned up in the 1861 index either. She may have died between 1856 and  the 1861 census, or returned to Bath - information not known by the son-in-law back in Australia.
Thanks for your offer of help, all information always gratefully received.  Do you have any ancestors that came to Victoria, Australia? I may be able to help.

Christine
