Thanks

Kate, did you have any luck with IGI?  I haven't. I did find out that they have Monmouth? listed under England.  Is this the old Monmouthshire or the new?  There's no Gwent listed under Welsh counties so I suppose there are no records! I'm new to IGI so I could be doing something wrong!!!

Hello Ozlady

You might find this useful in explaining the reorganisation of counties in this part of Wales:

http://welcome.to/Gwent.FHS

Some Monmouthshire records were included in England (Gloucestershire) in some censuses - if you are researching in the Forest of Dean it is as well to check both!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Ozlady, no I haven't had any luck with the IGI and Monmouthshire, I think they have a few records but they are very limited. I guess we will have to wait and see whether they make Monmouthshire a main county in the index.

All the best
Kate

What none of the replies have explained is why you are having trouble with Monmouthshire.

The problem was that no-one could agree whether it was in England or Wales and so it was agreed that it would change, I think every hundred years.  I believe that has now stopped but it is part of the cause of your confusion.
