1841 Shorter Brothers Wokingham
« on: Monday 28 November 05 20:37 GMT (UK) »
Would it be possible for someone to please check the 1841 census for the following 4 brothers born in Wokingham Berkshire  they are the sons of William Shorter and his wife Flora.

William  Shorter 1787/1790
James    Shorter 1797
Robert   Shorter 1805
Thomas  Shorter 1808

I have no information on any of these, but would appreciate a look to see if they are still living. Thanks.

Jericho,

From your post, you suggest that you have no information about these people.

In 1851 two are still in Wokingham:

Down Street
William SHORTER, Head, 59, Agricultural Labourer, b Wokingham
Hannah SHORTER, Wife, 59,   , Coventry Warwickshire
4 visitors in the household

King Street
Robert SHORTER, Head, 47, Agricultural Labourer, Wokingham
Sarah SHORTER, Wife, 49,  , Canterbury Kent
Eliza HOLMES, Daur in Law, 15, Finchampstead Berkshire
Rob SHORTER, Son, 19, Agricultural Labourer, Wokingham

My guess is that Eliza HOLMES is actually Step Daughter.

I'll have a look at 1841, but its not in good condition and is not indexed.

Regards
Harry

Jericho,

Heres Robert in 1861:

Robert SHORTER, Head, 60, Agricultural Labourer, Wokingham
Sarah SHORTER, Wife, 60,  , Canterbury Kent
James SHORTER, Son 28, Bricklayers Labourer, Hurst Wiltshire
John WILLIS, Lodger, 76, Agricultural Labourer, Shiplake Oxfordshire

Note: Hurst Wilts is probably Hurst Berks - bits of Berkshire were part of Wiltshire at one time.

Jericho,

1841 census:

Down Street

William SHORTER, 50, Ag L, born in County
William SHORTER, 22, Ag L, born in County
James SHORTER, 17, Ag L, born in County

Those are the only SHORTERs that I can see in 1841, but as I said the images are not good - many unreadable.

Hi HarryW

Would it be possible to see who was staying with William in 1851, and is there any more info that I can have on the 1841  for all three men. Thanks.

Jericho,

The four visitors with William SHORTER in 1851 are:

all b Wokingham, unmarried & all Agricultural Labourers

James HUNT 50
Daniel HAWKINS 44
Henry ALDRIDGE 45
James BUTLER 23

In terms of 1841, the inormation supplied is all that was captured on that particular census, relationships and actual places of birth were recorded from 1851.

In case you go searching for the streets named above.

Down Street was renamed Denmark Street in 1865 when the future Edward VII married Alexandra of Denmark and is one of the three shopping streets in the middle of the town leading from the Market Place.

King Street I don't think was actually in Wokingham Town but in Winnersh now called KIng Street Lane.  I could be corrected on that one.
