Huntingdon
« on: Tuesday 29 November 05 05:34 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace my family history.  The furthest I know is my grandfather, Vincent Huntingdon who came over to Canada sometime in the first half of the 20th Century.  If anyone knows anything on the Huntingdons up to then, I would appreciate it.

Hi Huntingdon!  :D

Although the name you are researching is not all  that common, we still need a bit more to go on, if we are to help!

Do you know when Vincent was born and where?  Have you identified him or his parents on the 1901 census?  What resources do you have access to and what help would you like?

The more information you can post, the more likely it is that we can help and that someone might identify a link with your family.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

- there's a Vincent Huntingdon here.  Emigrated in 1929 aged 6 on the Duchess of Athol.  Other Huntingdons on the ship were William F aged 49, Winnifred, aged 47, and Wilfred, aged 20.

You can order a copy of the passenger list which would tell you their address in England, where they were heading to in Canada, etc, and give you some idea of whether Vincent was the son of William and Winnifred, a nephew (could even possibly, if they'd had a daughter who was older than Wilfred, be their grandson...)

There's a Wilfred Huntingdon on freebmd.rootsweb.com who was b. 1909 in Sheffield.  The free indexes don't go up far enough that you could find Vincent's birth, but it does give you an idea of where they might be from.  William Vincent Huntingdon m. in Sheffield 1896 (also freebmd info), neither of the possible spouses listed are Winnifred, though.  Also a William Frederick Huntingdon m. in Sheffield 1907, possibly to a Winifred Emily Knight.  That latter is likely to be the William and Winifred pair we see on the immigration indexes (although it still doesn't tell us how they might be related to Vincent!).

If you know Vincent's birthdate you can try www.familyrelatives.org or www.1837online.com to find his birth registration on the indexes.

Hi,

If your Grandfather Vincent is the son of Wlliam Frederick Huntingdon and Winifred Knight, as mentioned in the previous post, then there's a connection with my family. William was born in Sheffield, England - he my grandmother's uncle and he had two sisters who also emigrated to Canada. I have traced the Huntingdons back to the early 19th century if you want further info.

thanks

DRL

Further to my last email, I've since discovered some old photos belonging to my grandmother with the names Winnie, Vince, June (or Jane) and Kay on the reverse.

From FreeBMD
Vincent C HUNTINGDON, birth Dec qtr 1922, Sheffield, 9c 1112, mothers maiden name KNIGHT

William, husband of Winnifred died in Welland, Ontario, on Oct 19 1934 aged 54. He was born Apr 16 1880 in England, father John HUNTINGDON, mother unknown. Informant was Winnifred his wife. He had been in Ontario 5 years. Occupation driller/engineer.

There is a Huntingdon family crossed the US/ Canada border on Aug 5 1929, and included a Vincent Cecil aged 6, born Sheffield, England, and also a Winifred aged 46. Wilfred I think is definitely Winnifred's son as he refers to her as nearest relative when he crosses from Canada to US at Niagara Falls in late Nov 1943. Wilfred was born 30 Apr 1909 at Sheffield. He had crossed on 18 Nov 1943 at the same place and names his mother as Winnifred.

In 1901 UK census

Hello, did you ever find what you were looking for on the Huntingdons.Looks like your grandfather who i believe is still alive was my grandfathers cousin, my  grandfather was George Arthur Huntingdon and their grandmother was Jane Huntingdon.I know a few of them went over to America and Canada and Wilfred and Vincents father died after being there only 5 years which you probably know. I've been trying to find out what happened to wilfred but have reached a blank,i would be very gratefull of any info.Kind Regards,Sara.
