Help please with prison in 1851/61
« on: Wednesday 30 November 05 20:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi all - new here, so please be gentle.

One of my ancestors was governer of Halifax debtors prison and/or county jail. His son's 1849 birth cert says so and so does his 1871 census entry (listing him as the former governer of ... the prison closed in 1868). The trouble is I can find the family in neither the 1851 nor 1861 censuses. Come to that, I can't find the prison or any of the inmates either! I can find the two prisoners at the police lockup and inmates at the workhouse, but no prisoners at te "New Jail", as it was apparently known. Can anyone help and point me in the right direction? Please!

Regards
Les

Hi Les,

You might be better posting to the Yorkshire list with the family information from the 1871 census that you have found.  e.g. names age and place of birth.  These help enormously.

The Prison may have been the one out at Soyland, 1861 piece number 3289.

Thanks for your replies - I think I'll take your advise and post to the Yorkshire list. I posted here because I was wondering if there something special about prisons in general and if was just looking in the wrong place or searching in the wrong way.

Thanks for the Soyland tip, but no, I can't find them there either.
