Whereabouts is Cormby. please?
« on: Wednesday 30 November 05 20:43 GMT (UK) »
Looking through the 1851 census for the Conley family in Hull their place of birth is down as South Ireland Cormby.
Does anyone have any idea which townland or parish this may be as I cannot find it and I've tried loads of variations!
Thank you
Best wishes

Just wondered if the Co - is County but rest doesn't really fit any pattern- thought at first of Mayo but there doesn't seem to be Conleys there. Sorry I couldn't help really!
Good luck

Thank you for your ideas. Made me look again at the writing but no county fits into what has been written

Hi
The article below is useful on Irish place names; it's worth looking through the whole thing, and also to click on the 'help' button within the article, as it gives examples of tricky elements to decipher.
(I had a quick look and couldn't find Cormby; maybe the handwriting was so bad it actually reads something quite different?!)

Thank you for your suggestions. It is written with a capita C / o / space/ omission mark with an r above/ m/b/y.
As I said I have tried loads of phonetical combinations. These people are not my ancestors but I thought it worth looking into as my Conleys came from West Drumore in Sligo around 1840-2 and settled in Hull in Yorkshire.

Hello Scarbro,

I hope these help both you and Mags. These addresses are pure magic when you are puzzling over the names of townlands and/or surnames. seanruad enables you to search for combinations of letters, in townland names, in several different positions. The other two addresses are based on Griffiths Valuation of Ireland 1848-64. The second of those two has a facility enabling to check a second name, ie in the case of a marriage, to see if the couple might have lived in the same parish. If you need a few really useful good addresses to add to your favourites these come highly recommended.

Cormby may be a misspelling for Cormey in Co. Cavan or Cormoy in Co. Monaghan. You might also consider Corbeagh in Co. Cavan

Dear Christopher
Thank you for all the info and suggestions you have given me. I tried searching on the seanruad site but came up with nothing. Clearly don't have the knack !
I like your idea of Corbeagh in Co.Cavan. The census officer must have heard a 'b'in the placename for him to write it down. I'll now have a look and see if Conleys lived in Co.Cavan
Thank you once again
Best wishes
