Coroner's inquests - which newspaper & where?
« on: Wednesday 30 November 05 21:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Had a bit of a "rash" of deaths with the coroner's involvement. Couple are natural causes after all but two might have made it to the papers.

Any suggestions for follow up?

1856 Pendleton Colliery - head injury from crush between the cage & landing stage. Was the Manchester Evening News going then & where can I find old copies - Central Library?

1902 Burscough / Ormskirk - found drowned, verdict suicide whilst of unsound mind. Any suggestions for local paper / archives? There is the Ormskirk Advertiser [weekly these days] but does anyone know how long it has been published or if there was something else before it & where I can go to check?

Thanks for any suggestions

Drowned in what? Just thinking there is no sea near Ormskirk or Burcough so if he drowned in the sea it might be in the Southport papers. Southport Library holds copies of old newspapers but they I doubt they have the Burcough/Ormskirk papers

But he could have drowned in the Leeds Liverpool Canal...
Davies: Flintshire & Liverpool
Williams: Anglesey & Liverpool
Hughes: Anglesey
Evans: N Wales
Street: Lancs & Cheshire
Skilling: Liverpool & Ulster
Gilfillan: Co Down
McNickle: Ulster, Derry
Dempsey: Co Derry
Bilsborrow: Liverpool
Potter: Liverpool

Hi

I had presumed it was the canal, especially with the junction being in Burscough, but I don't know how far back the Ormskirk Advertiser goes!

couple of thoughts...the Greater Manchester Record Office 0161 832 5284..would tell youif they have the appropriate records..
Central library certainly for old newspapers..ultimately the British Library but thats in London.
Could the guy have drowned in a mill lodge?Or as mentioned the canal?

www.uk.olivesoftware.com/ brings up British Library online ---Manchester Guardian is on for 1856 and you can go through each page --a long job --you might find something.
