I think so - I had an Aunt christened Helena who was always know as Nell and appears on one of the census as Nellie.

Thanks for the replies - Eleanor was one I am familiar with - I hope you are  correct GG because I have Nellie on the census but a registration  at the right time and place for Helena.

I have an Eleanor who was called Nellie, but I also have an Ann who was called Polly and I dont see the connection at all, so you never know.

My Dad's name was Neville & he was called Mick all his life - so I don't know either  ;D
but I thought Helen / Nell a possibility.

        If you google "the name nellie" or any other name ,..it will give you a lot of info.
  ie  meaning of the name nellie:
       gender-female:
       origin--greek:
       meaning-the bright one:
       similar names-nelly,nellis,nelle,nel,nela.....
