Private Jones managed to help evacuate six wounded men through a hospital window despite coming under frenzied attack from Zulu warriors. He is believed to have worked on tour with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show but ended up in poverty in a Salford workhouse. He pawned his VC for £5 before eventually selling the ticket.
