After the relief of Lucknow by General Havelock during the India Mutiny of 1857, Havelock as a boy's name became popular. FreeBMD has 8 examples of Wilsons with the name Havelock born as far apart as Durham amd Kent from 1859 to 1906.
The Havelock Wilson involved with the unions - who was president of the seaman's union but because of his union connections had some involvement with the miners, was Joseph Havelock Wilson, referred to as J Havelock Wilson or just Havelock Wilson. He as far as I know came from the north east of England.

Hello Valda,

My William Havelock Wilson went from the Merchant Navy to serving on Gunboats which were apparantly disguised as ordinary Merchant Ships, but the nets were whipped aside if an enemy submarine appeared, & the hidden guns put into use!

Hello Romilly

I fully support Valda's view on Havelock Wilson.  Joseph Havelock Wilson, my Great-Grandfather, was born in Sunderland and his parents were certainly of a generation to be inspired by the exploits of the British General in India.  The name continued to be passed on - my brother and I also share it.

I never met my Grandfather, John Havelock Wilson;  he left his wife and young son and was never spoken of.  All I know of him was that he was a retired Navy officer (World War I) who later contracted tuberculosis and may have remarried.  Perhaps he moved to Wales and you have researched him?

Hi Again,

Just had a quick look on Ancestry for you, & found this John Havelock Wilson, - born in Lambeth:

John Havelock Wilson
Year of Registration: 1894
Quarter: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Lambeth
County: Greater London, London, Surrey
Volume: 1d  Page: 355

Also found, (I think) your Joseph Havelock Wilson on the 1901 England Census,
Ref: RG13/428.

He is living at 44 Fairmount Road, Tulse Hill, Lambeth, London.
Here they all are:

Anne Brown born 1835  Sunderland, Durham, England Mother-in-law
Ethel M Wilson born 1882  Sunderland, Durham, England Niece
Jane A Wilson born 1859  Sunderland, Durham, England Wife
Jane A Wilson born 1887  Sunderland, Durham, England Daughter
John T Wilson born 1882  Sunderland, Durham, England Son
Joseph H Wilson born 1859  Sunderland, Durham, England Head
Joseph H Wilson abt 1889  Sunderland, Durham, England Son.

Hope that helps.
Best Wishes Romilly.

The 1901 census family from Sunderland, where Joseph Havelock Wilson was a 'trade secretary' (just Havelock on the 1881 census, a sailor) and a general secretary in Camberwell in 1891, does not appear to have had a son called John Havelock Wilson.

Joseph Havelock Wilson senior who married in

Marriages Mar 1879
WILSON  Joseph Havelock    Sunderland  10a 551

certainly had a son called

Births Sep 1888
WILSON  Joseph Havelock     Sunderland  10a 622

but he doesn't appear to have had a son called John Havelock Wilson (on the 1901 census for Lambeth that person might very well be John H born circa 1894 the son of John Wilson a bookmaker born Charlton).

Joseph Havelock's son John from the information from the 1891 and the 1901 censuses was probably one of these two registered births

Births Dec 1883
Wilson  John Thomas     Sunderland  10a 607
Wilson  John Thomas B     Sunderland  10a 3[56]9

whereas this could be John Havelock Wilson, whose birth was registered in Lambeth in 1894, with his family on the 1901 census.

1901 census RG13 403 folio 102
49 Agnes Road Lambeth  London
John Wilson 47  Charlton, London,  Head Married Bookmaker
Mary C K Wilson 39  Pentonville, London, Wife  Married
Mabel Wilson 13  Lambeth, London,  Daughter
Edgar H Wilson 9  Forest Gate, Essex, Son
John H Wilson 7  Lambeth, London,  Son
Beatrice A Wilson 4 Lambeth, London,  Daughter
Charles L Wilson 16mths  Lambeth, London,  Son
Mary C Parks 64 London City Mother-in-law Widow Dressmaker
Amy Parks 25  Greenwich, London,  Sister-in-law Unmarried Dressmaker
