Arabella Jones, late1800s, Help!
« on: Sunday 04 December 05 08:03 GMT (UK) »
My grandfather James McLoughlin was born at Kilkeel in Ireland on 13/12/1881. The birth cert gives his father as James McLoughlin, coastguard, and mother Arabella Jones. Maybe then, but certainly since then, the family has been centred in Liverpool, coastguard cutters do move about. The family name is McLaughlin, so may be it changed, but more likely the birth cert was transcribed incorrectly.
I'm up against the proverbial brick wall on this. There were only about half a dozen Arabellas of suitable age around then, but I can't find any info. If there is anybody that could shed light on this side of my family, I would be most grateful.

Hi Slickbutton,
Arabella Jones is quite uncommon even for Wales. These are the only child bearing age Arabellas
1. Born in 1857 at Newport. Living at 58, Bengel St in Liverpool in 1881, but down as unmarried daughter.
2. Born 1854 at Abergele. Daughter of John and Sarah. She had two sisters, Margaret and Florence that were born in Ireland (1881 census). Their address in 1881 was St Asaph, Flint.
3. 1881 census has Arabella Jones as head aged 31, widowed. born Wales. Daughter Elizabeth born Liverpool. Address Leith Terrace, Forth St. Kirkdale, Liverpool.
4. There was an Arabella Jones b. 1852 living at 8, Stonewall St, Everton, Liverpool in 1881.
5. Arabella Jones b. 1852, living at Meadow Place, Mold.

As you can see, none of them really jump out, but there is one more below.

There isn't an Arabella Jones in Ireland on rootsweb, Ancestry, or IGI.

I would imagine that with a name like Arabella Jones she was highly likely born in Wales, it's not really Irish, but with grandad being in the irish navy on a coastguard cutter, she may have had to follow him about. Of course there is the possibility that they weren't married, and having the baby in Ireland was being discreet. In which case she would probably still go on the England/Wales census. In 1881 Wales census, there was a James McLaughlin at Northop in North Wales married to Mary Marsden. He was a Master mariner born at Newry, Co. Down, 1847. Also in Northop was an unmarried servant girl called Arabella Jones aged 19. It's possible.

All the best
Jim
