1851/1861/1871 census: McGowan at St Helier, Jersey
« on: Sunday 04 December 05 13:29 GMT (UK) »
Hello:
May I have lookups for the McGowan surname in the 1851, 1861, and 1871 censuses, please?  I have the 1881 census which shows Elizabeth, age 72, and widowed, together with daughter Jane, age 36.  I am hoping to learn Elizabeth's husband's name and place of origin, and the names of any other children.
Thank you, in advance, for any assistance offered.

hi sarah - I was just looking for this & got no results - so I was wondering how you found it ! - OK now I know - it seems their name is transcribed as Gowan with the Mc bit separate - regards John

Hello, Sarah:
Thank you very much for your very quick and thorough reply.  So, now I know the husband's name, Thomas, and that he was born in Ireland; also, that Jane had two sisters.
Of course, answers lead to more questions ... always :) ... and I have some reading up to do about Channel Islands family history research!
All the best,
Alison

Hi Alison -

... and 1841 -

Gloucester Street, St Helier:
//
Thomas Mc Gowan 45 Navy H.P. I
Elizabeth 30 I
Folio 47 page 46
Alice Gowan 1 W
//

There seems to be an assumption in 1841 that Elizabeth was also born in Ireland, and I'm not sure what 'W' means - Wales???

If you need any more help with births, marriage or deaths records in Jersey, I will be pleased to do some look-ups in the local Archives Centre.  There are lots of connections between Jersey and Nova Scotia - I wonder how you family ended up there?
