Help on McCarthy please
« on: Sunday 04 December 05 18:46 GMT (UK) »
My ggrandmother Mary Catherine McCarthy b. Ireland c1865 married Thomas Edward Gibson b. New Zealand 1863, in Liverpool on 18/3/1885. The marriage certificate gives Mary's father as Dennis Daniel McCarthy, a bookkeeper. The 1881 and 1891 Liverpool censuses have a Dennis Daniel McCarthy b. c1833, dock porter,  born Ireland married to Mary Ann b. c1837, children Charles b. c1867, Dennis 1873, and Agnes b. c1876.
If anybody has any info on the above, I really would be grateful. Like many others who come up against the Irish connection, I feel as though I'm up against a brick wall.
Many thanks
Jim

Sorry I'm not much help I've searched for clues but to no avail. Are you decided that this Dennis and co are her family?
According to those details Charles was born in Liverpool but I couldn't find them in 1871.
In 1881 Mary Catherine would be old enough to be working elsewhere - does she have an occupation and address on her marriage certificate?
I do realise that you may be just trying to get the Irish details though. You might find her in Irish BMD - you can search indexes at LDS libraries. Registration began around 1864/ 65 I think.
Best wishes
Heywood

Hi Heywood,
Many thanks for your interest. The details are directly from the marriage certificate(West Derby). There is no occupation on the cert. The 1881/91 censuses have Denis at 17 and 47, Penrhyn St. Liverpool respectively. Not on earlier censuses. Mary would have been 16 in 1881 and probably not registered with them because of being in service with another family. There is a death for Denis of Dec 1894 in Liverpool aged 62 (8b 14). A Dennis McCarthy married in West Derby in Jun 1860 (8b 638). The only Irish records that I can find are a Denis McCarthy marrying Mary Hurley at Rathmore Co Kerry on 5/10/1857, that's on IGI, and Dennis McC married Anne McC on 4/10/1853 at Shandon, Cork. His father Humphrey and her father Timothy(Rootsweb).
There is a Mary C. McCarthy b. 1862 at Tranmere, Cheshire, with Father Daniel b. Ireland 1821, and brother Dennis. I got her birth cert but it does not say Mary C., just Mary, the father is Stephen Daniel, and mother Jane. Wrong family I believe.
Apart from that, there is not much more I can tell you.
All the Best
Jim

Hi Annie, nice to hear from you.
The 1901 census for 28, Leycester St, Scotland, Liverpool has:
Thomas E Gibson 38 Head Railway Worker New Zealand
Mary E. 36 Wife Smallware shopkeeper Liverpool
Mary A. 15 Dau   Liverpool
Thomas S. 13  Liverpool
Margaret 10   Liverpool
Agnes  6  Liverpool
Neloria  4  Liverpool
George P. 2  Liverpool.

The 1891 census for 28, Leycester St, Scotland, Liverpool:
Mary Catherine Gibson 26 Wife Smallware shopkeeper Lpool
Mary A. 5 Dau Liverpool
Thomas 2 Son
Margaret 4mo Dau
There is no Thomas E. but on the 1885 marriage cert his profession is mariner, so he was probably at sea.

Obviously 1901 Mary E. and 1891 Mary Catherine are the same. The marriage cert has Mary Catherine so my money is on Mary E. being incorrect.
I did see Mary C. as servant with the Carters at Melville place, and can't find any alternative fit, so I think you may be right and that is her, that is why I suggested she may have been in service.
On 5/8/1910 Margaret Gibson aged 19 married my grandfather James McLaughlin at St Anthony's church, Scotland Rd, Liverpool. Father Thomas Gibson House painter. Bride and groom were both at 35, Wilbraham St, Scotland, Liverpool.

Assuming Mary Catherine McCarthy is correct, I think that I will have to go along with Dennis Daniel as being her father and the only one's I can find are a dock porter at Penrhyn St aged 59(1891) and 48(1881).
All the best
Jim
