Hi

I'm a FreeBMD transcriber. They have been having major problems over the weekend, they haven't even been able to update their home page to edit the error message. There were all sorts of problems for transcribers as well which they've now apparently sorted out, but they are still working  to correct the others.

Bear with them, I think is the answer.

Not found any probs recently but sometimes the searches take ages evn you you have narrowed the fields down to save time.  Presumably the servers are having to cope with massive demand rather like the PRO when the 1901 was released.  It proves they are popular.  Has rootschat ever been overwhelmed by too many people?

If you've been having problems today in particular, it's probably because the database was updated today! It always gets deluged with hits just after an update, and this one is the first since 10th October.

(must have a look and see how many records I've now transcribed....)  ;D

It's hapenning less often, since transferring to the new server a few months ago, but now and again it still happens .......

I try to enter RootsChat and get a screen saying (amongst other things) "RootsChat is incredibly busy at the moment so the server has throttled down the input.  Try again in about an hour"  :( :(

Usually, within 15 mins. or so, it's OK again  *relief*  :)

If you are already logged in, you may notice that replies take longer to save, and things like that.

Thanks for all your comments folks. Not just me then! :)

One thing I do find strange is that ,If I understand correctly,Ancestry uses the same data base from freebmd . Are they physically sharing the same server?
If so Ancestry must have priority as Bmd searches are usually very quick. However the downside is that you cannot do combination searches( Spouses surname) on ancestry unlike freebmd,so still have to use both. sites.

No, they don't use the same server, Ancestry is provided with a copy of the data by FreeBMD. But beware, Ancestry doesn't update with the current information nearly as often as FreeBMD does.

Incidentally - when I first started using Ancestry early this year, their searches took for ever - I think their servers must have been updated since then. And..... don't forget they charge for most things, whereas FreeBMD is entirely manned (including tech support) by volunteers, and still has a lot of records to transcribe.

You could always volunteer to help transcribe, then the database will get better, quicker!!  ;D

Veron (still transcribing 1903 births - over 32000 so far.....)  ;D
