ST CUTHBERT'S, CARLISLE CHURCHYARD
« on: Monday 05 December 05 13:21 GMT (UK) »
Greetings, all,
I  recently asked for some MI's from here, which were kindly provided by Steven Hill.
I forgot to ask if the gravestones were still there, and if so is there a plan available anywhere -- I would  love to visit next time I am in the country..
                 Regards
                            Jane

Hi

At Saint Cuthberts Church part of the churchyard is not open to the public and has been locked with no access on safety grounds.  There are a few graves you can see only  on one side of the church, but the local archive office does keep a copy of the gravestones at Saint Cuthberts Church.  I wanted to visit my great great great grandmothers grave there, but was unable to view as it was in the no access area of the grounds.

Thanks Lorimer.
What  a shame  :(  but only to be expected after so long. I suppose I can always peer at the churchyard from afar.
Are the archives the ones at the local records office, or somewhere else?Carlisle is pretty much off the beaten track for me, so want to optimise time there
Regards, and thanks once again for your reply

The archive office is at Carlisle Castle easy access from the centre of town, better on foot, five minutes walk.  Saint Cuthberts church is in the centre of the town, two minutes walk from the town centre.

The archive office at the Castle holds a book on the gravestones at Saint Cuthberts Church that some kind sole in the past transcribed.
