Why personal details?
« on: Monday 05 December 05 14:03 GMT (UK) »
Having read an advert from The Genealogist I was interested to find out what areas were covered by their indexing of the 1841 census - especially as they operate a pay-per-view option.  I couldn't find anywhere on the website to tell me the coverage, so I emailed them, saying that I would want to know the coverage before I would think of a subscription.  The reply was swift.  It told me, in effect, that if I went through the subscription process it would tell me the coverage.  I tried it - but there's no way of getting to the information without filling in all one's personal details as if prior to taking out a subscription.  I don't want anyone to have all that information if I'm not going to sign up.  What do others think?
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

I agree with you this is abusive...
I'm sure you'll find a rootschatter who subscribes to the site and can tell you what is actually covered  ;D

Yes - but if your research is NOT in London, Lancashire or Yorkshire, you want to know if they've got your area.  There seems no reason why they can't state exactly what's available.

I agree it is annoying, i have not found any relatives in any of those areas at all. They really ought to say.

I subscribed to a pay per view site that advertised the 1841 census and when i looked they had two counties that were of no use to me.

I've just had a look at the site and found this page - which seems to give something about census coverage.
