Hello,

I have tried unsuccessfully to track down the Vol and Page No for the birth of John Hall born Crossbarrow Cumberland 1845.  Parents Charles Hall and Catherine Lander.

As you may know, registration was not compulsory until 1875; it may never have been registered.

Where is Crossbarrow?  Am I right in thinking it is near Workington?   If so it will probably come under the Cockermouth Registration District so it might be worth contacting them direct and asking them to look for the birth.   They generally do a search across a few years without charge.   If you look at the GRO site the reference will start with the number  XXV  as that was the area number in those days.

Hello

I tried today at my local archive centre at Carlisle to find Crossbarrow, and I was informed that it does come under WORKINGTON district.

But I did find on the 1851 census for Cockermouth as follows:-

61 Saint Helens Street

Charles Lowther, 78yrs, Potter - St Bees
Catherine Lowther, 72yrs,  - Whitehaven

Catherine Hall, married, daughter, age 40 yrs - Potter - Ulveston, Lancashire.
Betty Hall, G/D age 14 yrs, Potter,Cockermouth, Cumberland.
Hannah Hall, G/D age 12 yrs, Potter,Winscale, Cumberland.
Charles Hall, G/S age 8 yrs,Potter,  Ullock, Cumberland.
John Hall, G/S age 3 yrs, Crossbarrow, Cumberland.

I just thought it was a close call to your request, the only thing is that it looks like her maiden name was Lowther and not Lander.

Regards

Louise

Merry Christmas
