Irish grandad
« on: Tuesday 06 December 05 15:20 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find any record of my great-grandfather. His name was Charles Arthur Cullen. He died in Billericay, Essex in 1936, aged 58 years. My mum always said that he was her Irish granddad who committed suicide by coal gas. He wasn't married to my great-gran, so no info has been found about his family or birthplace. I wonder, if anyone has access to the Irish births, marriages and deaths index, can you do a quick search? I can't find any record of him in the English & Welsh records, so I'm beginning to think that he was born and raised in Ireland, but I don't know where.

Thanks!

Kris.

Hi Kris
Looking at the IGI for Ireland, there are several Charles Cullen's born in the 1870's, in several different counties, but without more info, who is to say which one, if any, is 'yours'?!
Presumably you have already looked through the IGI yourself?
Sorry can't be of more help at the moment; you will need at least a county to start with, unfortunately.

Cheers

Hi,
A big 'if' here -  If you are fairly sure about his age- you could check Irish BMD indexes at an LDS library - there may not be many Charles 'Arthur's around at that time.
That might be one way- otherwise it is as Mags says- very difficult.
Good luck

Thanks.

I'll try the Irish BMD at my local LDS FHC for any Charles Arthurs.

It's a really tricky one cos I know he was living in Islington in 1917, when my gran's eldest sister was born. I guess I won't know for sure until the 1921 census is released. Roll on 2021!

Regards,

Kris.
