Army regiment help, please
« on: Tuesday 07 September 04 19:09 BST (UK) »
If anyone's familiar with army regiments and their badges during World War II I'd be grateful if they could take a look at the attached very poor photo.  If it's impossible to recognise, maybe you could confirm my vague idea that he was in the REME.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

I am no expert, but I recently found the only existing photo of my grandfather. He is in uniform and I wanted to identify his cap badge.

On another board, somebody directed me to these sites:

http://www.army.mod.uk/presscentre/badges/cap_badges/com_arms/cap_com_arms.htm
and
http://www.militarybadges.org.uk/
where lots of cap badges are displayed

in particular, REME badges
http://www.militarybadges.org.uk/badges/corps3.htm

Personally, I don't think it does look like the REME badges, do you have any other details ?

Also found this REME site through Google:
http://www.rememuseum.org.uk/

Hope this helps,
Good luck
Bob

I peronally think it looks likes Vickys MP badge.  If there any reason you thought he was in the REME, Suttontrust?

Thanks for the replies.  I'm more or less certain that he wasn't in the Military Police.  The idea of REME is just a half-remembered thing from childhood, plus the fact that his son went into that regiment.  There's no one left to ask now, hence the reliance on the photograph.

I have found WW1 Royal Engineers & the post 1953 (Queen Elizabeth II) Royal engineers cap badges.

I would assume that George VI badge would be very similar.

Your badge has the Crown, Laurel Wreath, an engraved circle inside it, and the initials of King George (GR vi). The centre section is voided (ie not solid as per WW1).

I don't think it's the Military Police one, as in the picture, the bottom of the badge is just a circular wreath, the MP one has a label across it.
