Can anyone date this photo please
« on: Thursday 08 December 05 05:32 GMT (UK) »
The attached photo came to light recently but we can't work out which branch of the family it is. Is there anyone can give me an idea. It is most likely a scottish photo as are all of my ancestors.
Thank you

Victoria reigned for over 60 years! I think a shorter time span can be guessed.

c. 1870 - 1875

The velvet collar on the gent's jacket back left and the apron front and large bottoms of the sleeves on the girl back right both feature on the 1870 to 1875 pages of one of my costume books.

Hi

I am guessing late 1880's to 1890's.  Any idea what the actual mount of the photo is ie has it got a border or is it plain card with print to the edge, what colour or tint is the original and dimensions.  Reason I ask is Robert Pol has some books on the subject

I would agree with Watermusic - early to mid 1870s.

I think 1880s-90s would be too late for this photo - the style of skirt and sleeve suggest 1870s.  If it was 80s/90s, everything would be working for a slimmer silhouette, and the sleeves definitely wouldnt be huge like these!  ;D

To everyone who help date this picture I am truly grateful.    I do not know what type of picture it is as this is just a copy. The date in the bottom right hand side is the date my sister sent it to me earlier this year.
Thanks again

Hi all

3 useful books for photos which I use.

Robert Pols Dating Old Photographs 2nd ed pub FFHS

Robert Pols Looking at Old Photographs pub by FFHS

Robert Pols Family Photographs 1860-1945 pub by the Public Record Office

You should find these online at various booksellers.

They are a really interesting read.

Have fun reading them.
