Do you have any idea where? There is a William Welsh baptised 20 SEP 1695   Saint Andrew, Chardstock, Dorset, England  on the IGI. Mother Susan Welch.

Hi Teresa

Living in Australia, I'm not very familiar with Dorset either - but I have some family from there which is why I follow this area. I have a program that gives the distances between parishes  (parloc). According to it, Hardington is in Somerset  ??? The distance between it and Chardstock is given as 40 miles.

I have noticed recently more records on the IGI for Dorset
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

so it could be worth looking for more of the family there.

I have also found the Dorset Parish Clerk site very good

Teresa

I had a look on BVRI2 but nothing promising. This isn't tremendously surprising if the children were born in Hardington as Somerset coverage isn't wonderful (typical as nearly half my ancestors come from Somerset.....  ::)  )

Trish - how do you know when LDS adds more records to the IGI. Do they say anywhere they've done an update, or do you just know because things appear?

Hello Teresa,

I have looked through the on line IGI and note that there are extracted christening records for Ann and Mary Welch from Bere Regis, Dorset, as well as a Mary from Piddletrenthide, Dorset.

Mary christened 23 March 1739 Piddletrenthide, daughter of William and Martha Welch
Ann christened 8 April 1737 Bere Regis, daughter of William Welch
Mary christened 26 April 1747 Bere Regis, daughter of William Welch

At Broadwindsor, Dorset, there are extracted records for marriages for:

Benjamin Welch 5 June 1769 to Mary Baker
John Welch 9 Feb 1752 to Mary Rose ( the only Rose I found in my search )
Robert Welch 18 Jan 1788 to Elizabeth Russell ( probably too late to be yours )
Henry Welch 11 Jun 1838 to Lucy Bishop ( much too late for your listed family )

The death in Bettiscombe of Robert is a submitted entry.

Bettiscombe and Broadwindsor are close to one another, Piddletrenthide is about 15 miles distant and Bere Regis is perhaps about eight miles further afield

There are only marriage extractions from the church records from Broad Windsor on the IGI and it appears that the LDS do not have other records. Perhaps they are available through another avenue to check for baptisms.

There are many Welch, Welsh entries in Chardstock but none in the time frame you are looking at.

Hi Angela

You've answered your own question  8)  A few folks I have not previously found on the online IGI suddenly appeared. I'm not sure why I went looking for them again - perhaps with faint hope I may have missed something earlier. I am finding the new batches a little strange - often in lower case and sometimes without film numbers, but they are specified as extracted entries. It seems to be worthwhile to recheck - especially if you find the films of the parishes of interest are held by the LDS.
