I think in a leasehold you don't own the buildings either.  You just get the use of the property for a certain term of years.

Eons ago when we first married we had a leasehold property in London, we bought it with 75 years still on the lease.  You can almost treat the premises as you would like, except to make structural additions etc.  We were also responsible for the routine upkeep etc.  The  premises actually belonged to the Grosvenor estate.  We sold on the lease after 6 years and the new "owners" had full use of the property for the remaining term of 69 years.
