Sorry, butting in - just in case this helps :)

On the 1851 census, the family that Angie found are living at Garnllwyd Upper, Western Maesteg in Llangynwyd Parish.

It's the only "likely" match that I can see and bearing in mind Samuel & Jennet are not exactly common names on their own let alone as a pairing makes me think there's a high probability there's some connection.

That makes a bit more sense - there is still a part of Maesteg known as "The Garn" - a street called Garn Road, and a pub.

This is more or less in the centre of Maesteg

Still not sure where the Newcastle bit comes in, although I'm sure there's a place called Newcastle near Bridgend, which is about 10 miles south-eastish from Maesteg

Just checked back on the 1841 census and it gives the district as Bridgend, ED 14 Llangynwyd, Cwmdu - address just recorded as Maesteg.

Addresses nearby (10 houses either way of the residence detailed) include Mount Pleasant, White Lion PH & Queen Victoria PH.

White Lion isn't there, and there are two Queen Vic's in existence at the moment - one in Castle Street, and on in Commercial Street.

I kknow that there's a book published showing the old public houses that were in Maesteg, but that are now long gone - I'll try and find it and see if we can't narrow this address down more.

Not a problem - nice to see so many people taking an interest in my neck of the woods!

Just to clarify, Maesteg appears to have been set in the parishes of Upper and Lower Llangynwyd.

Can't remember off-hand, but one contains Llangynwyd, Cwmfelin, Cwmdu and Garth, and I'm pretty sure the otehr contains Maesteg, Nantyffyllon and Caerau (possibly Cymmer too).

If you need more clarification, let me know

Hi all
I was surprised to log in here and find all this conversation happening  this morning- okay not really that suprised because I have noticed the people here are very helpful.  Thanks, I appreciate all the help and information given.

Not being from Wales but from the west coast of Canada I am learning the geography - slowly.  The Elizabeth (Rees, I think) I am looking for who married John Phillips is from Cowbridge and the Samuel and Jennet Rees who might be her parents are from LLantrithyd which according to Genuki is 3 miles away from Cowbridge.  So is Maesteg close to Cowbridge or LLantrithyd - not that that confirms anything because I don't know where there were in 1841.  Just fishing away here seeing if I can make a connection.

Maesteg is closer to Cowbridge but still within the "right" area.

On the 1851 census Samuel's birthplace is recorded as "St Nicholas, GLA" and Jennet's as "St Mary Church, GLA".

If you check out the below Genuki page entries for each, scroll down and look at the map locations, you'll see that both locations are a few miles away from Llanrithtyd. :)
