Tiplady in Cramlington
« on: Monday 12 December 05 09:49 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I have been searching through the census records trying to find the Tiplady family in Cramlington in 1851. I have them in 1861 in Cramlington but the mother is a widow and I would dearly love to know who the father was.
The Mother has used two first names in the following census but in 1861 she was using Elizabeth.
The family I am looking for are

Elizabeth Tiplady born 1817 in Blyth (she also uses Isabella)
George Tiplady (son) born 1836 in Cramlington
Dorothy Tiplady (dau) born 1846 in Cramlington
James Tiplady (son) born 1844 in Cramlington

in the 1861 census there was an Elizabeth Pack lodging with the family she was born 1808 in Blyth.

Thanks in anticipation

Caroline,

Sorry I have not got widow Tiplady'sn husband's name.
( but it should be a fairly easy task... there is available,  in various places, e.g. Newcastle Library, a set of microfiches  "Northumberland Marriages 1813-1839". to cover all Parish , (Church of England) marriages within the county... I will access these sometime this week... but someone might beat me to it !)

I notice from Free MBD her death was registered as
" Isabella Tiplady (66 yrs)" in March Quarter of 1882 within Tynemouth Registration District ( which covered High Pit, Cramlington)

Silly Trivia for you...

Spanish for Elizabeth is "Isabella".

Thank you Michael, the trivia is always interesting. So many names change and finding explanations for the changes is wonderful. It would be wonderful to know the husbands name.
Many thanks

Hi Caroline

Your family is in High Pit in 1851, but the image is appalling and the transcribing not much better !

Tiplady is transcribed as Golesby in the index. Dorothy is Brantley and Sarah is Frank!

HO107/2412  Folio 506  Page 46  Sch 152
TIPLADY
?Matthew Head Mar ?43 Coal Miner ??
Isabella Wife Mar 34 Northd ?
George Son 16 Coal Miner Northd Cramlington
Margaret Dau 14 Northd Cramlington
Sarah Dau 10 Northd Cramlington
Dorothy Dau 5 Northd Cramlington
James Son 1 Northd Cramlington

The age of James is heavily scored over so could be seven.
County of Birth for ?Matthew is not Northd as Isabella's.

Maybe someone else can take a look at the image online or a fiche copy might be a bit better - cue Michael !

I'll look at the 1841 Census and try and confirm Matthew or not.

Hi Caroline

Looks like Isabella/Elizabeth was a second wife.

Here's the 1841 Census entry.

HO107/824/1  Folio 27  Page 48
Cramlington Terrace

TIPLADY
Matthew 31 Coal Miner Y (born in County)
Dorothy 36 Y
Matthew 8 Y
George 6 Y
Margaret 4 Y

The marriage of this couple isn't on the Northumberland Marriage Index 1813-1837.

There is a Cramlington TIPLADY marriage of Joseph and Ann DUNN on 3 Nov 1834 which might be useful later in your research.

Dear Caroline
Did one of your Tipladys- Matthew die in a fall of stone in the yard seam of Bomarsund Pit on Nov 30th 1936.
there is an entry to that effect in my great grandfathers diary.

Many thanks Helen your information is fantastic. Knowing they are on the 1841 & 1851 census is a big boost. Thankyou so much. I think the son Matthew must have died in 1843 there is a BMD for one. There is also a BMD for another Matthew . Dorothy's BMD death entry is march quarter of 1849 so if there was another marriage it would be a quick one. I wonder if Isabella/ Elizabeth was ever married to Matthew or if indeed he never married her.
Graham I suspect this wasn't my Matthew but may well have been either his father or another relative. It's all so fascinating isn't it ?
Many thanks to all

Well, Helen was not wrong about the quality of the image of the census page..... worst I have ever seen.... hardly any marks showing up on the page
( enumerator forgot to suck his indelible pencil)

But it did look as though Matthew was  born in Co Durham, " R???"
