The Times, Thursday, Nov 30, 1893; pg. 7; Issue 34122; col E - Oxford, Balliol College: E. P. Oppenheim, of Rugby School, distinguished in the examinations.  (Could this be your Eugen?  You can contact Balliol college for info on Ernest, I believe their records would say if he had other relatives also attending: http://www.balliol.ox.ac.uk/history/pastmem/tracing.asp )  Or it might be Ernest with P mistakenly written for F.

There is a Eugene Jakob Oppenheim - married Dec 1908 in Marylebone, went bankrupt in 1913 (was a banker) in The Times.

The Times, Thursday, Jun 28, 1894; pg. 10; Issue 34302; col E
- Oxford, Final Honor School of Jurisprudence, Class III - F. S. Oppenheim, Trinity.

The Times, Saturday, Jul 23, 1898; pg. 16; Issue 35576; col E
-second class, for admission on the roll of solictors of the supreme court:
Frederic Sigismund Oppenheim, BA, Oxon.

The Times, Saturday, Dec 09, 1911; pg. 4; Issue 39764; col A
Stanley Webb Johnson, LLB, served his clerkship with Mr F. S. Oppenheim, of Messrs Vaudrey, Oppenheim, and Mellor, Manchester.

 :D

Ooh it just keeps getting better!

How brilliant all those boys went to such great schools eh?

That first one would make sense for Ernest but it would be terrific if indeed it was Eugen.

Eugen was listed on his daughter's death certificate as a Paper Manufacturer and Merchant/Agent and so it seems likely that he did not follow into the field of law.

Lovely to see that Fred also went to Oxford and that 1911 date corresponds with what I know about his practice in Manchester.

Brilliant stuff, I'll chase up Trinity College and Bailiol now and what manifests!

:P Jingle bells and all that goofy yuletide cheerk

thank you for your time and efforts.  May the coming year be as fruitful as the last and the Christmas season a safe and happy one for us all!

Hey!

Back in Australia we used to just say cherry mistmus! (after champagne on the beach, anyway)  Christmas in summer is a whole other "world" of experiences. LOL

Here in the Netherlands in the Holland part anyway, everyone is saying "Vrolijk Kerstfeest" or Prettig Kerstfeest".

I'm fascinated by the fact that not all cultures celebrate christmas and yet all languages seem to have a way of wishing someone Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Hello Kirsten, my grandfather was Ernest Ferdinand Oppenheim.  I have been most interested in the information you've posted.  I do hope you get this and would like to get in touch.

Best wishes Tessa

Hello Kirsten

I cant answer your question but Ernst Ferdinand was my grandfather. I am visiting Alassio where he is buried and was pleased to find the name of his Villa which I also want to visit.

Apparently he  and his family went there every year as it was too far for the children (my father was one if them) to travel from school in England back to India.

I have hust been to Northern India but dont know where Ernst Oppdnheim was located.

Do you know where that was?

Thanks

Celia Bird
