Index Issue
« on: Wednesday 14 December 05 01:14 GMT (UK) »
Hello Board

Please I could someone help me out with this issue, I was reading some posts and a few urls where given, ie

ONLINE INDEXES
Incomplete GRO indexes – Free to view.
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
http://www.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=5963

I went to the freebdm site and the ancestry site, I put in the name of James McDavid and got a return for a birth in the March Quarter for 1838 District/Medway, County/Kent, Vol 5, Page 327

So I went to ancestry and entered the same name and got the same return, but when I went to the Familysearch website and entered the info nothing came back, this birth was not there?? I was hoping I could find out who his parents werer on the Familysearch site, but no luck.

Can anyone tell me if this is the norm?? I dont have a credit card so using the pay to view sites is not possible for me.

Thank you for yout time.
Maeeye

Angie, thank you for your reply, it seems a dear way of finding out his parents names, maybe when I win the lotto I will be able to afford to do it.

Thank you for replying even so.

Angie sometimes the most obvious one doesn't see, of course posting to the Kent message baord would be the way to go. Will do so today.
Thank you again
Maeeye

1838 being a year after civil reg I may be lucky, may being the operative word.

Hi Maeeye,

I tried 1851 census and can't see a James McDavid anywhere.

Generally, familysearch.org has parish records for births, marriages and deaths pre1837 although there are many later than this.  FreeBMD, as the site says, attempts to index registrations made through public offices from July 1837 and ancestry.com uses the same index files.

To be absolutley certain who the parents are in any birth it is always best to buy the certificate.  I have been caught making assumptions, only to be proven wrong when the certificate arrives.

Depending on the exchange rate, the cost for delivery to our dear Australia is approx $20.  You only need a lotto win if your ordering heaps at once.

Cheers, Colin
