Caio, Evans
« on: Thursday 09 September 04 12:32 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to trace the parents of John Evans, b: 1821 in Caio, Carms.
The 81 census gives his place of birth as Pimsaint, but 91 and 71 state Caio.
I assume Pimsaint refers to Llanpumsaint.

His occupation was cooper. He married Maria Molineux from Aberystwyth, settled there and had his own business.

As trades tend to stay within the family, I think a good starting point would be other coopers in Caio.

I've not found any trades directories that cover the area that far back, so I've no confirmation.

Any takers?

I have just come across this site and read your message there is a small village known as Pumpsaint which borders the village of Caio and under the old local area it came under the area of Caio.

Llanpumpsaint is a totally different village near Carmarthen.

To update my previous posting:

I have the marriage certificate of John and Mary. John had apparently been married before, which would explain the age difference. I have not found any reference to his first wife, but I assume there were no children, as these would have appeared in the later census.

Johns father is given as Evan Evans, occupation Cooper.

As Skychief confirmed, the village is Pumpsaint.

I also have John and Maria in the 1861 census.

There is in the 1841 census  for Caio and Evan Evans, but he is a farmer. There is no sign of John, but this isn't surprising, as he would be 20, hence out earning his own living.

I cannot find John in 1851, nor can I confirm his parents names in the Parish Registers.

Stuck is the word I'd use to describe it.

Sorry, don't know how to access you on your Llanllyfni family.
Have you seen the website
www.nantlle.com?
If you click on history nebo nasareth robert jones
there is a little story of a family living at Taleithin Isaf. Also it is possible to stay b&b in Taleithin Isaf, Tanyrallt, Llanllyfni. Website - www.members.madasafish.com/haliawilliams/accommodation
According to my husband you get to Tanyrallt from the bend near Llanllyfni Chuch and take the narrow road out to Tanyrallt. The farm must be out there somewhere.
Hope you find it. Let me know

I have found a possible candidate for John in 51, however the year of birth doesn't tally up. He is married to someone else - which does tie up with him being a widower on the MC I have - together with a daughter.

But I'm not convinced this is the right one, so to answer your question: Yes I'm still after the info.
