How can I find someone who emigrated in the 1950's/60's? Please help
« on: Friday 16 December 05 21:54 GMT (UK) »
My Gt uncle, Thomas Edward Cowdrey emigrated to Toronto in the 1950's [possibly 60's] and lost contact with his family in England not long afterwards.

We would dearly love to know what became of him, his Mother was devastated not knowing what had happened to her eldest son.
It's really difficult to get information out of Thomas' brother as he is still angry that his mother was hurt so badly, but we think that Thomas left with his wife [possibly Queenie? have been unable to find a marriage] and two children, one of which is believed to have been adopted by Thomas and wife.

I have been trying to find him or his family for 3years to no avail.

Any ideas? :(

Have you checked:

Canada411:
http://findaperson.canada411.ca/

Search only on the surname Cowdrey in "All Provinces" and you’ll get 27 hits.  You could phone or write to these people in case they are related.

There’s a T. Cowdrey in Grimbsy, Ontario.  No Thomases or Queenies.

I didn't try spelling it without the "e", but you might want to try it, just in case.

The Toronto Star has a page in its Sunday paper called, "Have Your Say".  You could email a letter and ask that it be published in that section.

Good luck!

You might consult the 1950s, '60s, 70s etc Toronto phone books for your Thomas.

All big libraries in Toronto and area have them. You could write to some and ask for a lookup

Thank you, Josephine and Eillo. Will give these things a try.

A couple of years ago a lady found me some Cowdrey phone numbers in Ontario but as I'm very shy it took me ages to pluck up the courage to ring, and unfortunatley when I finally did the first lady who answered the phone was very rude and it put me off! [I had taken the time difference into consideration so it wasn't the middle of the night]
I may try writing.

Thank you for your help

Yes, it's very difficult, especially now with so many telemarketers phoning people.

Good luck!
