Nantwich St name
« on: Thursday 22 December 05 14:24 GMT (UK) »
I am researching Cooke family from Nantwich on the 1861/1871
Census's but can't make out street name.
It looks like either Beam St or Bram St.
Does anyone living there or researching know please ?

Many thanks
Sandyq

Hi Sandyq,

Yes it is still there now - the main A530 - and it shows up on an 1880 map here:
http://www.old-maps.co.uk/

Just put Nantwich into the search engine and Beam St is in the middle of the enlarged map.

Cheers

Keith

Hi, I am three miles from Nantwich and used to work in Beam St. Can I help with looking for a particular address?

Hi Kathb,

The house number doesn't appear on the 1851/1861 Census's I have for the Cooke family, but in 1871 Mary Cooke is shown as a widow now living
at Lord Crewe's Almhouses in Beam St.
I guess Beam St is a pretty long one - would have just liked to see if the family stayed in the same house or moved.

Thank you for your offer
Best wishes
Sandyq

Hi, Sandyq
Beam Street isn't that long.  There were Lord Crewes Almshouses, when I read Halls History of Nantwich, some many years ago. Don't quote me on this one, but the former Almshouses are now Wright Almshouses and the original frontage is the Wright Almshouses with new (1970's) elderly persons flats behind.
I am going into Nantwich tomorrow and will look at the plaque on the front door and let you know if it states that it was previously the Lord Crewe and whether I am correct in recollection.
Nantwich being an ancient market town had several almshouses due to generous local benefactors.
Will let you know

Sandyq, just back from Nantwich, the almshouses are the Crewe ones not Wright as I thought.  The original frontage is still there with the new accomodation behind.  The inscription above the door in old english is as follows:
Thefe almfhoufes were erected in the year of our Lord 1767
by
John Crewe of Crewe efqr
In pursuance of the wills of
Sir Thomas Crewe Knight
and
Sir Thomas John Crewe Knight
It is an impressive frontage and sorry I didn't have my camera with me.
Merry Christmas and Happy Family Research
