Help! I've crossed my first border!!
« on: Friday 23 December 05 01:42 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

This is all a bit vague at the moment, but I'm stuck with the following people in 1851:

Mary Ann Gibson - 3xGt Grandmother - b.1825 South Shields England.  She is on the 1861 census as being married, but her husband isn't at home (typical!).  Her eldest son George Gibson b. c 1852 is listed as being born in Scotland - don't ask me where! So I would imagine they would've been in Scotland in 1851 as I can't find her easily on the England Census.

So, really what I'm looking for is help with the next step - a birth for George, a whereabouts for the 1851 census or a marriage for Mary Ann ?? to a ?? Gibson somewhere around 1848-1851...

In the meantime, I will order my 2xGt Grandfather's birth certificate and see what that reveals about his Father's details!

Thanks for any help received!

Regards, Emma ;)

Hi Emma

There were 13 George Gibsons born 1851-1853 in Scotland - take your pick!!

Unfortunately there were 437 male Gibsons married in Scotland 1848-1852!!!

Can't check them with a female christian name only only scotlandspeople.

Here are the births:

Emma,

The 1851 Scottish census is, according to the ScotlandsPeople site at:

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

due to be coming online at the beginning of 2006 (but scheduled timetables have often been delayed in the past).

Incidentally, remember that Statutory Registration did not begin in Scotland until 1855 so it may well be that there is no record of George's birth.

Good luck,

JAP

Many of the Scotland records of this time are on the IGI.
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

You can search for George with parent Mary. I found no Mary Anns but two possibles with mother Mary.
You can also search for the marriage as well.

On SP I only found 2 George Gibsons 1851-53 with mother Mary. These are probably the same two as are on the IGI.

I'd more or less discounted the George GIBSONs in the IGI (with mother Mary and born in Scotland round about the right time) - especially noting Mary Ann's other children in the 1861 census (George Thos 9 b Scotland, and John 5, Joseph 3, Matthew 9 mths all b Durham).

It seems that the parents of the IGI George GIBSONs all remained in Scotland.

From the IGI:
1. George b 1850 in Barony Lanarkshire, parents William GIBSON and Mary LAIRD.  People of those names were married in 1849 in Barony and parents of those names had children in Lanarkshire or Renfrewshire in 1850, 52, 54, 57, 59, 60, 62, 64, 66, 68, 70, 72.

2. George b 1853 in Falkirk Stirlingshire, parents David GIBSON and Mary NIMMO.  People of those names were married in Falkirk in 1836 and parents of those names had children in Falkirk from 1840, 42, 47, 49, 51, 53, 55, 57.

3. George b 1853 in Lonmay Aberdeen, parents George GIBSON and Mary HUTCHISON.  People of those names were married in 1852 (LDS submission) in Lonmay and parents of those names had children in Aberdeenshire or Banffshire from 1853, 54, 56, 58, 60, 62, 64, 66, 68, 70, 71, 73, 77 (most of these are extracted entries but some of are LDS submissions).

Let's hope the 1851 census does come online as promised and that Mary Ann was both married and in Scotland at the time!

Evening!

Many thanks to you all for your help...I'm fine with all my other lines in England, but as soon as I research my own direct one, they throw me over the border to Scotland!!

I will try the links you have given me and see what I can get!

Thanks again!

Merry Christmas - one more sleep to go!

Regards, Emma ;)
